TYPES OF NEUROTOXINS
NEUROTOXINS TREAT:
Wrinkle relaxers | Lip flip | Bunny lines | Nasal flaring | Orange peel chin | Gummy smile | Platysmal bands | Teeth grinding | TMJ pain | Jawline slimming | Migraine relaxation Hyperhidrosis | treatments | Down turned smile
WHAT ARE NEUROTOXINS?
Also known as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, neurotoxins are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. They can be used to treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder. According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, neurotoxin injectables are the most popular cosmetic treatments in the U.S.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR NEUROTOXINS?
Neurotoxins have traditionally been used as an anti-aging procedure. A few years ago, the most popular age to begin neurotoxins was the mid-to-late 40s. Today, they are a popular addition to the skincare regimens of patients in their 20s. When and where to begin is a discussion to have with an experienced and trusted skincare provider who can accurately assess your skin and describe the results that can be achieved with neurotoxin injections.
Neurotoxin injections are not for everyone. They are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or for individuals with certain health conditions. If you are considering injectable neurotoxins, it is extremely important to consult with a skincare professional with a proven background in cosmetic medicine, substantial training, and experience administering botulinum toxin injections.
HOW DO NEUROTOXINS WORK?
Facial lines fall into two general areas: dynamic and static. Static wrinkles are the fine to medium depth lines that are always visible on the face, even if completely at rest. These wrinkles are caused in part by repeated inflammation induced by free radical damage from environmental aggressors or by repeated habits such as sleeping positions. Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, are directly related to how your facial muscles move and manipulate the face.
Neurotoxins are proteins that are injected into the muscle to relax overactive, wrinkle-causing muscles. They work by blocking signals sent by the nerves to the muscles responsible for contractions. Once the signal is blocked, the muscle cannot respond, which will soften and relax the wrinkle associated with the movement. In other words, a neurotoxin “freezes” facial muscles, erasing wrinkles completely or preventing them from deepening.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE WHEN RECEIVING NEUROTOXINS?
Neurotoxins are injected directly into targeted muscle areas using a fine-gauge needle. While the procedure is a quick minimally invasive appointment, it is not uncommon to experience some bruising, redness and/or swelling at the injection sites as well.
It is important that the treated area is not manipulated in any way for at least four hours or longer post-procedure. Doing so can move the neurotoxin, which may transfer the effect to an area it is not wanted. The amount of time that it takes for the toxin to begin relaxing the muscle depends on the formulation, the amount injected, and how quickly the toxin spreads in a particular patient. Results are generally seen within 7 days.
PRE AND POST NEUROTOXINS TREATMENT?
Neurotoxin injectables do not cause any sun sensitivity, making the procedure suitable for any time of the year. It is generally recommended that patients skip any exercise routine on the same day as injection and avoid lying down for at least 4 hours afterward to ensure that the toxin settles evenly. It’s also a good idea to avoid any blood-thinners such as alcohol or aspirin for a couple of days pre-and post-treatment. Please discuss with your health care provider if you are currently on blood-thinning medication before treatment. How long the neurotoxin lasts depends on the amount used and how quickly your body metabolizes the toxin. Many users report an “active” period of 3-4 months.
DERMAL FILLERS
TYPE OF DERMAL FILLERS:
DERMAL FILLERS TREAT:
Lip filler | Nasal labial lines | Marionette lines | Cheek | Jawline | Chin | Under-eye | Hand rejuvenation | Ear lobe correction | Necklace or tech lines | Temple area
WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
As we age, our supplies of collagen and elastin decline and the fibers themselves become weaker and less springy. The surrounding fluids that cushion and support these fibers also decrease and begin to “dry up.” This combination of factors results in wrinkles, ridges, and a general loss of volume in the skin. While neurotoxins will help smooth out wrinkles caused by muscle movement, only a dermal injectable can address the depressions and loss of volume associated with aging.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DERMAL FILERS?
Fillers are appropriate for any skin type and address a multitude of age-related concerns. They can eliminate the depressions caused by deep creases, wrinkles, or scars. Fillers can also be used in larger areas such as the cheeks. Dermal fillers are now popular for augmentation and contouring. More recently, researchers have discovered that injectables also stimulate fibroblasts to synthesize additional collagen. Fillers should only be used by adults, as they can inhibit bone structure if not fully developed at the time of injection. Fillers are not currently recommended to be used by pregnant or nursing women. Always consult with your skin care professional to assess whether dermal fillers are right for you and to understand the best-advanced homecare regimen to help protect and maintain results.
HOW DO DERMAL FILLERS WORK?
The most popular fillers are derived from hyaluronic acid, a water-binding sugar that is already produced in the skin. Other fillers are composed of synthetically derived substances, such as calcium-based microspheres.
A healthcare provider injects a gel-like substance into the skin at the approved depth for the filler. The filler substance fills up the area, resulting in improvements such as smoother nasolabial lines or fuller cheekbones.
Your skin care professional will determine which dermal fillers are right for you and develop a pre-and post-treatment regimen to help protect and maintain results.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE WHEN RECEIVING DERMAL FILLERS?
Recovery time varies for each patient and for each type of filler injected. You can resume most activities right away, but it is generally recommended that you avoid intense physical activity for the first 24-48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising. Be sure to discuss your specific recovery plan with your physician prior to scheduling your injections. Your initial appearance after treatment with any dermal filler may include: An overfilled appearance to treated areas, swelling or bruising ranging from mild to severe, temporary numbness or redness, palpable lumps or hard areas at the injection sites, and hypersensitivity reaction that can seem like an allergic reaction with hives and swelling.
PRE AND POST DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT?
A single session of an injectable has the potential to last up to two years, depending on which kind of filler is used. The least permanent options, those composed of hyaluronic acid have the potential for rather a quick absorption within 6 months. This especially holds true if the filler is placed in a region with a lot of movement.
Facial fillers do not increase the sun sensitivity of the sun, making them a great year-round option. However, until the initial swelling has subsided, patients should avoid excessive heat exposure, including prolonged sun exposure. Your skin care professional may also recommend a post-treatment skincare regimen to help enhance recovery and protect results.
